This drawing shows Okayama Castle, made at the end of a day spent in the nearby Korakuen Garden.

I had spent most of the day walking and drawing in the gardens, and by the time I reached the castle I didn’t have long. I found a place to sit and worked quickly, trying to capture the structure before the light shifted.

The drawing is more immediate and economical than some of the others, but I like the way it holds together — a sense of the form, the dark rooflines, and the contrast against the sky.

It felt like a good way to end the day, moving from the quiet of the gardens to this final, more urgent drawing.

This replica drawing from my sketchbook can be purchased with or without the seam of the sketchbook visible. Please select your preference.
