This drawing was made in Ueno Park on my first day in Tokyo. I always like to begin a trip with a drawing, and this small shrine, set slightly off the main paths near the museums, felt like the right place to start.
I was drawn to the green roof and red structure sitting quietly among the trees. I found a place to sit nearby and spent some time working into the drawing, building up the lines slowly. The marks are loose and layered, with colour used to pick out the contrast between the architecture and the surrounding foliage. The stone lantern to one side became an anchor point in the composition.
