This drawing was made at Tenno-ji Temple, at the lower end of Yanaka Cemetery.
I started the drawing in bright sunshine, drawn to the open space, the tree, and the long line of the building. Partway through, the light shifted and the sun disappeared, and the whole scene changed quite dramatically. I decided to stop at that point rather than try to adjust it.
At the time it felt unfinished, but looking at it now, I really like that quality. The drawing holds that specific moment — the warmth of the light, the colour in the ground, and the contrast of the structure against it.
There’s something about leaving it at that point that feels right.
