This drawing was made at Komeda Coffee on a Saturday afternoon, not long after I’d been drawing the Great Buddha. It’s one of my favourite places to stop in Japan — the dark wood interiors, the booth seating, and the sense that people are quite happy to sit and stay for a while.
I settled into a booth and spent about an hour and a half drawing. The two women I focused on had been there just as long as I had, quietly talking and passing the time, which made them perfect subjects.
The drawing is built up through loose, observational marks, trying to capture both the figures and the atmosphere of the space.
I also ordered one of their Shiro buns. They’d run out of the smaller size, so I ended up with the large one — far more than I needed, but absolutely delicious.
