This is the first of three drawings I made in Korakuen Garden, where I spent the day working.
I had just arrived and was finding a place to begin, drawn to the curve of the path and the way it moves through the space. The small structure and surrounding trees gave me enough to hold onto, while still allowing the drawing to stay open.
It was mid-March, and the gardens had that early spring quality — the grass pale and slightly bleached after winter, before everything fully comes back into colour. That softer palette runs through all three drawings from the day.
I worked into this one slowly, building up the lines and colour in layers as I settled into the space.
