This is the second of three drawings I made in Korakuen Garden, where I spent the day working.

This time I focused on the pond, with the small island and bridge creating a natural structure to work from. The space feels carefully composed, but still very open, with long views across the water and into the landscape beyond.

It was mid-March, and the gardens had that early spring quality — the grass still pale and slightly bleached after winter. That softer palette gives everything a more muted, atmospheric feel, which I wanted to carry through in the drawing.

I worked into it steadily, building up the marks and colour in layers, trying to hold onto that sense of quiet and space.

This replica drawing from my sketchbook can be purchased with or without the seam of the sketchbook visible. Please select your preference.

Your print of my drawing will be the same size as the page in my sketchbook. The larger ones are for £35 are 25cm x 21cm and the smaller ones for £30 are 23cm x 12cm or 17cm x 14cm . It will be printed on archival high quality Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper.
