This print grew out of a two-day drawing trip I made to Charleston in the summer of 2024. I spent my time moving slowly from room to room, filling my sketchbook with the things that make Charleston so distinctive: painted walls layered with pattern, furniture decorated by hand, unexpected corners, and objects that still feel charged with the lives that passed through them.
The composition brings together the details that stayed with me the most. The round table, which in the print sits out in the open, is actually the dining room table — a piece I sketched several times because of its shape and the way it anchors the room. The chairs are borrowed from the Charleston studio with their beautiful woven seats. On the right, you’ll spot the bust of Virginia Woolf tucked amongst the flowers, as well as Vanessa Bell’s painted mantelpiece with the two seated figures and the flower arrangement. And behind the house, the well-known Sussex painted horse appears as a nod to the garden sculptures that dot the grounds.
It isn’t a literal view, but a stitched-together memory of the rooms, objects and motifs that made the biggest impression on me. If you’d like to see the preparatory drawings, they’re all gathered in the Drawings section of my website.
Hand-printed in a rich red ink on cream Fabriano paper, each print has been individually inked and pressed, so no two are exactly the same. It’s a piece made with real affection for Charleston and for the handmade, inventive spirit that runs through the whole house.
This print is part of my travel series, that along with the Fabriano paper, all have gently rounded corners to give the work its own distinct look.
Each print is signed and individually hand-pulled.
