This mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock) print celebrates the regal elegance of the grey crowned crane, a bird I’ve long been drawn to for its drama and poise.
Each print was made entirely by hand using traditional Japanese materials and techniques. I carved and printed five separate woodblocks to build up the image, layering water-based pigments to create delicate shifts in colour and tone.
This is part of an ongoing bird series, created using mokuhanga to explore character, movement and texture in feathered form.
✨ Each mokuhanga print is handprinted, so you may notice slight variations in colour or small areas of pigment at the borders — part of the character and uniqueness of the process.
Printed on handmade washi paper.

INTRODUCING
Sam Marshall

My name is Sam, I'm a printmaker working from my studio in rural Northamptonshire. I've recently left London after 22 years and am now enjoying the fresh air, open skies and wildlife of my new life in the country. Miss Marple my ever faithful mini dachshund loves it too!
When I'm not making work/ running workshops / coaching from my studio then I'm travelling around the UK and Europe with my sketchbook.
