This was the last drawing I made that day in Ritsurin Garden—an unexpected delight of an afternoon. I had arrived in Takamatsu planning to use it as a base for visiting the art islands, but discovering this beautiful garden changed my plans.
I stopped to sketch the Engetsukyo Bridge, the largest wooden bridge in the garden. Its name means “Crescent Moon Bridge,” and its reflection in the water creates a perfect arc. The pond below was full of koi carp, their movement adding life to the scene.
The drawing is full of layered marks, capturing the textures of the bridge, the water, and the surrounding greenery. It was a peaceful moment, and this drawing holds the calm and reflection I felt at the end of a full day of exploration.
