This two-block linocut was inspired by a trip to Lanzarote in 2024, when I travelled there just after Christmas with my mum and dad and stayed in Playa Blanca. I really didn’t know what to expect from the island, but I completely fell in love with it. The volcanic landscape, the whitewashed buildings, the strange sculptural plants and that incredible contrast between black earth, blue sea and bright sun all found their way into this print.
I’ve gathered together little memories from across the island: the extraordinary cacti of César Manrique’s Cactus Garden, the low white houses and volcanic mountains, a small church, and the distinctive vineyards of La Geria, where vines are planted in hollows in the volcanic soil and protected from the wind by curved stone walls known as zocos. Down at the front are papas arrugadas, the little wrinkled Canarian potatoes I ate while I was there.
There are some more personal bits tucked in too. The swimming pool and flamingo come from the place we stayed, there’s a cat curled up in the sunshine, and Miss Marple and I are out in a tiny boat in the distance, despite the fact that she never actually came to Lanzarote. I like sneaking her into my prints anyway. And, as always, I appear as my slightly odd big-eared fox-like creature.
The print is made from two separate lino blocks, one printed in a warm dark brown and the other in a soft Naples-yellow tone, building up all the layers, pattern and texture of the island.
Each print is signed and individually hand-pulled.
