This is one of my favourite Matisse paintings and it is in the Heinz Berggruen collection. Heinz Berggruen was one of the most prominent German art collectors of the 20th century. When I heard that the Musee de l'Orangerie was putting on an exhibition of his collection, I quickly bought my tickets and headed to Paris.
Seeing a painting you love and have only ever seen in reproduction is one of the true joys of my life, and this Matisse didn't disappoint. I spent a lovely couple of hours drawing the painting. A very special memory.
