The Imaginarium is my largest and most detailed etching, a fantastical landscape filled with creatures, characters and curious happenings.
I originally made the plate in 2015, drawing inspiration from medieval bestiaries, old engravings and the extraordinary landscapes of Giovanni di Paolo and other Sienese painters. Animals and imagined creatures wander through mountains, forests and strange little worlds, each seemingly caught up in a story of its own. There is so much happening within the image that I hope you discover something new each time you look at it.
The copper plate took me over a month to etch and aquatint, gradually building up the extraordinary amount of detail, texture and tone across the image. It remains one of the largest and most intricate etchings I have ever made.
Although I made The Imaginarium in 2015, I never editioned the plate. I recently rediscovered it in my studio and decided that, more than a decade later, it was finally time to print the edition.
Each print is signed and individually hand-pulled from the original copper plate.
