I return to the French Riviera again and again, usually basing myself in Antibes. I’ve been there so many times now that it feels a little bit like a second home. I tend to visit in September or October, when the heat has eased and the light is still beautiful, and I spend my days taking the slow train up and down the coast — stopping in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Juan-les-Pins, Menton, Villefranche-sur-Mer… all those little towns that you can wander for hours with a sketchbook.
This print is a small celebration of that whole area. The jumble of tiled rooftops, striped awnings, checkered tablecloths, a croissant (of course), and the everyday details that I always notice when I’m there. There’s a nod to the cactus garden in the Jardin des Poètes in Antibes, which I love. Marple appears too — even though she doesn’t come with me on these trips, she has a habit of joining my prints. And I’m there as well, tucked in a window as the fox-eared character I often draw myself as.
This piece is part of my travel series and is printed on warm cream Fabriano Unica paper. Each design in this series also has softly rounded corners, which give the prints a cohesive and recognisable feel. Each one is printed by hand on my Gunning etching press, so every impression has its own little variations.
