This is my very first mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock) print, created during a residency at the Karuizawa Mokuhanga School in Japan.
It features a keel-billed toucan, carved and printed by hand using six separate woodblocks and traditional Japanese tools and materials. Each layer was printed with water-based pigments on handmade washi paper. This piece marks the beginning of my journey into mokuhanga and forms part of an ongoing bird series exploring colour, shape and character through woodblock printing.
✨ Each mokuhanga print is handprinted, so you may notice slight variations in colour or small areas of pigment at the borders — part of the character and uniqueness of the process.
Printed on handmade washi paper.
Edition of 50

INTRODUCING
Sam Marshall

My name is Sam, I'm a printmaker working from my studio in rural Northamptonshire. I've recently left London after 22 years and am now enjoying the fresh air, open skies and wildlife of my new life in the country. Miss Marple my ever faithful mini dachshund loves it too!
When I'm not making work/ running workshops / coaching from my studio then I'm travelling around the UK and Europe with my sketchbook.
